Washington DC, formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, the District or simply DC, is the capital of the United States, founded on July 16, 1790. It is the only U.S. federal district. It is located on the banks of the Potomac River between the states of Virginia and Maryland.
The population of Greater Washington reaches 4 million (and whether to include the Baltimore-Washington playing, but already within the neighboring state of Maryland, and its metropolitan area, population reaches over 7 million). As the capital of the United States, in Washington there are the White House (office of the executive branch of U.S. government) and the Capitol (seat of the legislative branch). Besides being the seat of government, is an important tourist center, with monuments memorials to Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.
The city was designed by French architect Pierre L’Enfant, in the late eighteenth century, as a town center designed especially for government.
