New Orleans (La Nouvelle Orleans in French), is the largest city in the state of Louisiana, USA. It is also the main port on the Mississippi River. In 2000, its population was 484,674 inhabitants. After being partially destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the population declined significantly by evacuation or death and in 2006 was about half the population, between 192,000 and 230,000 inhabitants.
This city is also known for the legendary figure of Marie Laveau the “Voodoo Queen”. New Orleans is a multicultural city in the southern United States (with special influence African, Latin, Spanish and French), long known for its festivals, music and cuisine. Events such as Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest and the Sugar Bowl constantly maintain the city as a tourist destination.
