The Republic of Colombia is a South American country. Its northern and northeastern coast is the Caribbean sea, bordered by Venezuela to the east, southeast Brazil, with Ecuador and Peru to the south and Panama and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
The Andes dominate the western half of Colombia, and are divided into three ranges: the Western, Central and East. Among the mountains, Magdalena and Cauca rivers flowing into the low plains along the Caribbean coast. In the higher parts of mountains there are volcanoes, some of which are still active. The highest point is Pico Cristóbal Colón in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, with a height of 5775 m above sea level.
The eastern part of the republic is flat, with some dense forests with many rivers such as the Putumayo, the Yapura the Meta and Guaviare, which flows into the river Orinoco and the Amazon River. Colombia also has several small islands in the Atlantic and Pacific.
The local climate is hot along both coasts and the eastern plains, while the mountains and highlands can be quite cold. The largest city is the capital of Colombia, Bogota. Other major cities include Medellin, Cali, Cartagena, Barranquilla, Ibague, Manizales, San Juan de Pasto, Bucaramanga and Cucuta.
